๐Ÿ‘‹ Farewell: Microsoft 365 Copilot: People agent (from March 2026)

Hey Reader,

"When I first heard the People agent in Frontier was going away, I panicked a little. It had become my go-to before senior stakeholder meetings. But honestly, having those same insights baked right into Copilot where I already work has actually made my prep faster. I didn't realise how much switching between tools was slowing me down." - Senior Business Analyst

What's Changing

If you've been using the People agent through the Frontier programme, it will no longer be available from early March 2026. The good news is that the things you valued most about it, getting to know colleagues quickly, preparing for meetings, and understanding your organisation's structure, are being built directly into the core Microsoft 365 Copilot experience. You won't need to do anything to make this happen.

What's in it for You

  1. No disruption to your workflow: The People agent retires cleanly, with no action needed from you or your IT team. There's nothing to uninstall, reconfigure, or migrate.
  2. Broader access to people insights: By moving these capabilities into core M365 Copilot, far more of your colleagues will benefit from features that were previously only available to Frontier participants.
  3. A more connected Copilot experience: People-related features will now sit where you already work, inside the tools you use every day, rather than requiring you to switch to a separate agent.
  4. Your feedback shaped this: The People agent existed to learn what mattered most to users. Microsoft has taken that signal seriously. What you used and loved has directly influenced how people experiences are being built into Copilot going forward.
  5. Org Explorer and People app remain available: You haven't lost your ability to navigate your organisation. The People companion app and Org Explorer continue to be there for you.

Who it's Changing For

Primary audience: Frontier programme users who actively used the People agent

  • Impact: Medium. The specific agent interface goes away, but the underlying capabilities are moving into Copilot proper.
  • How they'll feel: Mildly disrupted at first, particularly if the Frontier interface had become part of their routine. Likely to adapt quickly once they discover the same value in core Copilot.

Secondary audience: Admins managing Microsoft 365 Copilot deployments

  • Impact: Low. No configuration changes are required and existing admin policies remain untouched.
  • How they'll feel: Relieved. This is one retirement that doesn't generate a support ticket.

IT Teams and Administrators

  • Impact: Low. No technical action needed on your end.
  • How they'll feel: Quietly satisfied. A clean, no-fuss retirement with no compliance implications is a good day.

Why It's Changing

The People agent was always a learning exercise, a way to test what users actually wanted from people-centric AI features before committing them to the full product. That work is done, and the lessons have been learned. Rather than maintaining a separate Frontier agent that only a subset of users can access, Microsoft is bringing those capabilities into the heart of M365 Copilot, where they can do more good for more people.

When It's Changing

  • Early March 2026: The People agent in Frontier is retired worldwide. Access ends at this point with no grace period, though no data or work is lost as a result.
  • From March 2026 onwards: Equivalent people experiences continue to evolve within core Microsoft 365 Copilot surfaces.

Remember: change succeeds when people understand not just what they must do differently, but why doing it differently serves them better.

Remember: upgrading isn't just about avoiding problems - it's about giving yourself better, more secure tools that make your work easier and more effective.

Go well and feel free to let me know your thoughts.
