👋Farewell: Microsoft Publisher (13 October 2026)

How's it going Reader, "

After October 2026, I'll be able to create our team newsletters and event flyers with tools that work seamlessly across all my devices and let my team collaborate in real-time. I'm excited about Designer's AI-powered templates that help me create professional-looking materials in minutes - something that used to take me hours in Publisher. The transition feels less like losing a tool and more like upgrading to something built for how we actually work today."

What's Changing

On October 13, 2026, Microsoft Publisher will no longer be supported and will be removed from Microsoft 365. If you currently use Publisher to create newsletters, brochures, flyers, or other marketing materials, you'll need to transition to other tools like Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, or Designer to continue creating these materials.

Who It's Changing For

Primary audience: Publisher users

  • Impact: High - Will lose access to a tool they actively use for desktop publishing
  • How they'll feel: Frustrated, anxious about losing familiar workflows, worried about learning new tools

Secondary audience: All Microsoft 365 users

  • Impact: Low - Most won't notice the change if they don't use Publisher
  • How they'll feel: Confused if they receive the message but never use the feature

IT Teams/Administrators:

  • Impact: Medium - Need to support users through transition, evaluate and deploy alternative solutions
  • How they'll feel: Concerned about support burden, retraining needs, and user complaints

Why It's Changing

Microsoft is retiring Publisher because desktop publishing has evolved beyond what Publisher was designed to do. The software was built for a different era and hasn't kept pace with modern needs. Today's tools like Word, PowerPoint, and Designer offer cloud-based collaboration so your team can work together in real-time, automatic updates that keep your designs fresh with new templates and features, mobile compatibility so you can create and edit on any device, and AI-powered design assistance through Designer that helps create professional layouts instantly. These modern tools integrate seamlessly with your other Microsoft 365 apps, making your workflow smoother and more efficient.

When It's Changing

The timeline follows a hard cutoff approach - this is a complete retirement without gradual phase-out:

  • October 13, 2026: Publisher removed from Microsoft 365 subscriptions
  • October 13, 2026: Support for perpetual versions (Office LTSC 2021) ends permanently
  • Until October 2026: Publisher continues to work normally with full support

No grace period: This change takes effect immediately on the retirement date.

This timeline gives organizations nearly a year to plan their transition and identify the right tools for their needs.

What's in It for You

  1. Cloud collaboration: Work on designs with your team in real-time instead of emailing files back and forth
  2. Always up-to-date: Access the latest templates, fonts, and design features automatically - no more outdated software
  3. Work anywhere: Create and edit materials on your phone, tablet, or computer seamlessly
  4. AI-powered design: Designer's smart tools suggest layouts and help create professional-quality materials in minutes, even if you're not a designer
  5. Future-proof: You'll be using the tools Microsoft is actively investing in and improving, with new features added regularly
  6. Better integration: Your materials connect seamlessly with Teams, SharePoint, and other tools you already use daily

Remember: change succeeds when people understand not just what they must do differently, but why doing it differently serves them better.

Go well and feel free to let me know your thoughts.
