From February 9, 2026, Microsoft Word will begin removing the "Send to Kindle" button, with full removal by March 9, 2026. If you currently use this button to upload documents directly to your Kindle device or app, you'll need to use Amazon's Send to Kindle website instead to get your Word documents onto your Kindle.

Who It's Changing For

Primary audience: Word users who currently use Send to Kindle

• Impact: Medium - Will lose a convenient in-app feature they may use regularly
• How they'll feel: Annoyed about losing the convenience, concerned about finding an alternative

Secondary audience: All Word users

• Impact: Very Low - most won't notice the change
• How they'll feel: Indifferent, or confused if they receive the message but never used the feature

IT Teams/Administrators:

• Impact: Low - Minimal support burden since there's a simple alternative
• How they'll feel: Relieved there's no complex migration, but need to communicate the change

Why It's Changing

Microsoft is removing this feature to streamline Word and focus on the core productivity tools that most people use every day. The Send to Kindle button was a niche feature that only a small percentage of Word users actually relied on. By removing rarely-used integrations like this, Microsoft can dedicate more resources to improving the features that make the biggest difference to your daily work - like co-authoring, grammar tools, and performance improvements.

The good news? Amazon provides a better solution anyway. Their Send to Kindle website works with many more file types (not just Word), gives you more control over formatting, and you can use it from any device or browser.

When It's Changing

The timeline follows a brief phase-out period:

• February 9, 2026: Retirement begins - feature starts being removed
• March 9, 2026: Complete removal of Send to Kindle from Word for Windows, Word for Mac, and Word for the web

Note: This feature was never available on mobile devices (iOS/Android)

This gives you about a month to adjust your workflow if you use this feature regularly.

• Try it out before March 2026 - you might find it even easier than the Word button
• Consider using the Send to Kindle browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, or Safari for even more convenience
